My professional photography career began in 1992 upon graduation from the University of Massachusetts with a degree in Visual Design - Photography. Since then I have worked in several different aspects of the business as a lab technician, an assistant, to currently running my own business. I've shot a variety of subjects for a variety of clients. For more information and examples of this please visit my other website at: www.matthewapoyantphotograpics.com.

Working as a commercial photographer has sometimes limited the subjects that I shoot. One day while with a friend on his boat he said to me that he would love for me to shoot Butler Flats light. My lifelong love for the sea and it's lure in addition to my friends suggestion, fueled my desire to photograph a lighthouse as differently from the norm as I could. Thinking about what a lighthouse meant to me, I decided that I needed to show what its purpose is. Unlike most lighthouse prints with colorful sunsets or beautiful blue skies, I felt that my shots needed to be dark and foreboding as an illustration of why these structures are so romantic to people (especially those of us who love and respect the sea). For mariners lighthouses are a sign of safety and a journey's end. For me they now symbolize hope and salvation in an often uncertain world.
